Prince Markaris VIII was killed before he became the Great King by monstrous beasts in the arctic wastelands of [[Garna]]. The exact nature of his death remains uncertain, although the few survivors claimed he died fighting.

Because of a presumed curse on the name Markaris and the strange untimely demise of every Great King with the name after the apparent heroic actions of [[Markaris I]], no one else gave their child the name. Many who mention the name will often add to every utterance, "cursed forever be the name."
