Prince Markaris VIII was killed before he became the Great King by monstrous beasts in the arctic wastelands of Garna. The exact nature of his death remains uncertain, although the few survivors claimed he died fighting.
Because of a presumed curse on the name Markaris and the strange untimely demise of every Great King with the name after the apparent heroic actions of Markaris I, no one else gave their child the name. Many who mention the name will often add to every utterance, "cursed forever be the name."
