The name Markaris was cursed forever by the Lunari in 4624 [8:68], when Great King Markaris II refused the assistance of the Lunari in the war against the Dark Magicians. His father, Markaris I, also refused the Lunari, but they provided a second chance to his son. Upon that rejection, Markaris II was left to die alone, unable to escape from a submerged cavern, while his army attacked the Dark Magicians. None survived, leading to the prevailing belief that Markaris II died in battle. In fact, the truth of the matter remained unknown until Josloy, through a stupid idea from some operatives from the Sisterhood of Jadela'Mar, happened upon the submerged cave and the remains of Markaris II.

After Markaris II, no one with the name survived any major endeavors they set out to accomplish. At first, the curse was laughable, since no one knew it was real, and people continued to name their children Markaris after Markaris I, who gained quite a reputation for his refusal to accept assistance from higher beings. By the time of Markaris VIII, people began to fear using the name, and the curse ended up being widely mentioned and the name avoided, even though no one yet knew it was real.
