Kellon is beginning to be more effective with a bow, managing to take down his first deer today. Unfortunately, Kellon was so excited that he rushed to the wounded deer before it died, and it kicked him hard in the leg. He’ll be fine, but there’ll be a nasty bruise for a few weeks. I had to help him drag the deer back to camp, but he managed to do most of the butchering. It’s too bad we’re not in civilized lands, or he’d probably want to keep some part of it as a trophy. A person’s first kill is always exciting.

Tora’Sor decided to scrap the idea of extracting any useable poison from the spiny fish she caught several weeks ago. The fish is dried and shriveled now, and we never managed to obtain noticeable results from our testing with arrows. It’s possible the fish isn’t poisonous, or maybe it is poisonous in a way we haven’t discovered. Either way, we’re not going to find and handle a live fish to find out. We could consider trying to catch a poisonous snake instead, but that too would be inviting disaster. We see plenty of snakes in our travels, but we rarely approach them. We can’t tell which are and are not poisonous so it’s best for us to leave them alone. Almost any potentially poisonous animal gets this treatment from us. I’d rather not make a great discovery than die in the process of making the discovery. I’m sure the others share this sentiment.

Dawn spotted signs of a rather large predator early this morning, and we come across the carcass of one of the large animals that resemble telefs. Judging by the size of the tracks, the creature probably stands at least as tall as we do, and judging by the carcass, it has an appetite that’s difficult to sate. The strange part is neither of us knows what type of creature leaves footprints like these. Rather than frighten the others, Dawn and I are keeping this to ourselves. We told them the large animal died naturally and picked clean by scavengers. I don’t think they noticed any of the tracks. If they do suspect a large predator, Dawn and I aren’t aware of it. We’re both making more arrows tonight with thick, sturdy shafts and our best points. We’ll be ready if anything attacks.
